Adrienne Overall’s practice uses the confluence of abstraction, figuration and opposition to investigate
the human need to recognise and create meaning in an ambiguous image.
Provoking our impulse to make associations with the ‘already known’ while at the same time challenging
our habits of interpretation, her paintings reveal our ability to accept the co-existence of different possible truths.
Overall’s current work juxtaposes what appear to be contradictory painting strategies, combining spontaneous and unpredictable methodologies with pre-planned mechanical and technological processes.
The paintings begin with automatic gestural mark-making or methods of chance and mediation to remove
conscious control, and are integrated with graphic pattern in a combination of fluidity, elusive imagery and
mechanical processes that echo the alchemical darkroom manipulations of her early photographic work.
Developed through intuitive and formal considerations, the paintings re-address our tendency toward known
patterns and certainty, making us aware of our own perception by creating oscillation and contradiction in a dialogue between the material object and the illusory image.
